Its name, Vila-seca, formerly <\/span>Villassica<\/span><\/b>, means ‘<\/span>village of the road<\/span><\/b>‘, and its origin dates to the pre-Roman period, specifically, to the time when the Iberian and Celtic populations existed, and who chose the territory of the town as a settlement.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n With the arrival of the Roman Empire in Catalonia, the colony of <\/span>Tarraco <\/span><\/b>was founded, whose natural harbour was very close to <\/span>Platja del Rac\u00f3<\/span><\/b>, now part of the municipality of La Pineda.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During the Middle Ages, when the Spanish territory was divided between Christians and Muslims, one of the most important actions was the repopulation of Camp de Tarragona, as well as the liberation of the noble admiral <\/span>Galcer\u00e1n de Pin\u00f3s<\/span><\/b>, who had been a prisoner of the Saracen pirates, in the 12th century, a time when it was also possible to avoid the delivery of the <\/span>Hundred Maidens of the Rescue<\/span><\/b>, as a request from the Moorish king of Almeria for the liberation of Galcer\u00e1n de Pin\u00f3s, according to the legends.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nowadays, we can find this character represented in the <\/span>Gegants<\/span><\/a>, a very characteristic element of Catalan culture. He is always accompanied by the <\/span>Maid of the Rescue<\/span>, representing the hundred maidens of the legend. It was not until after the <\/span>War of Succession<\/span><\/b> that the population experienced a great demographic increase, extending beyond the walls, as well as an increase in the importance of <\/span>agriculture <\/span><\/b>in the town’s economy.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n One of the most important places of interest in the town is <\/span>Castell dels Comtes de Sicart<\/span><\/b> in Vila-seca<\/span><\/b>, whose aesthetics have undergone major changes over the centuries. The first vestige of this great structure is the <\/span>Olzina Tower<\/span><\/b>, dating from the 12th century and owned by the first feudal lord of Vila-seca, <\/span>Ramon d’Olzina<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In 1899, <\/span>Isidre de Sicart i Torrents<\/span><\/b> acquired the building and its surroundings, converting it into the <\/span>castle<\/span><\/a> we find today, in neo-Gothic style. Its twentieth-century style stands in a majestic structure that takes us back to that time, when the grapes were pressed inside.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The building has recently been completely restored to house a <\/span>museum <\/span><\/b>that highlights the agricultural history of this town, and to dedicate this space to various <\/span>cultural activities<\/span><\/b>. The new building has a surface area of 3,150 m\u00b2, which is divided into two different floors.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This town has two spaces dedicated to worship. On the one hand, in the municipality of Vila-seca, is the <\/span>parish church of Sant Esteve<\/span><\/b>, dedicated to the saint that bears his name, who, according to legend, helped Galcer\u00e1n de Pin\u00f3s to be freed. This church, with a single nave, is Renaissance and Gothic in style. It is located in <\/span>Pla\u00e7a de l’Esgl\u00e9sia<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n On the other hand, on the road from Raval de la Mar, towards La Pineda, you will find the <\/span>Sanctuary of Mare de D\u00e9u de la Pineda<\/span><\/b>, initially built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 18th century. For example, <\/span>Portal de Sant Antoni<\/span><\/b>, which formed part of the second perimeter of the wall and gave access to Raval de la Mar, in the direction to the sea.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Also worth mentioning are <\/span>Torre de la Tuies del Caf\u00e8<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Torre de l’Abadia<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Torre de l’Ardiaca<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Torre del Delme<\/span><\/b>. All of them were part of the walled enclosure and are still in a good state of conservation. Near the sanctuary of the Mare de D\u00e9u de la Pineda, there is also <\/span>Torre d’en Dol\u00e7a<\/span><\/b>, which was used to watch out for the presence of pirates and looters.
