Over the centuries, and due to the need for an infrastructure to help sailors and fishermen, it was decided to build the famous Calella lighthouse, which was commissioned in 1859. The works were directed by the engineer <\/span>Mari\u00e0 Parellada<\/span><\/b>. It is worth mentioning that its operation was not <\/span>electrified <\/span><\/b>until 1927, leaving behind the use of paraffin and petroleum, and, even earlier, pressurised oil.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We cannot forget the magnificent views that this <\/span>lighthouse<\/span><\/a> offers, being one of the most visited places by residents and tourists, especially in summer, to enjoy the great <\/span>panoramic view<\/span><\/b> of the coastline of Calella de Mar at sunset. It is known as<\/span> Farola del Llobregat<\/span><\/b> (Llobregat lighthouse) and was active until the late 1960s.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the middle of the 16th century, <\/span>Torre del Cap del Riu Llobregat<\/span><\/b> was built to protect against pirates and corsairs who used to enter the mouth of Llobregat River to gain access to the territory. <\/span><\/p>\n Centuries later, in 1852, the current lighthouse was built to warn sailors of the sand that accumulated at the mouth of the river. In the 1920s, the land on which the lighthouse stands became part of Barcelona port. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Another of the oldest lighthouses on the Catalan coast is<\/span> Torre del Rellotge<\/span><\/b> (Clock Tower), located on <\/span>Moll de Pescadors de Port Vell<\/span><\/b>, in <\/span>Barcelona<\/span><\/b>. It was built in 1772 by the Spanish military engineer <\/span>Jorge Pr\u00f3spero de Verboom<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n Although it retains its pyramidal structure from its inauguration, the clock that crowns this building was placed many years later, when it ceased to serve as a lighthouse, with the recent construction of the Montju\u00efc lighthouse.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” custom_padding=”0px|||||” custom_padding_tablet=”|60px||60px|false|true” custom_padding_phone=”|40px||40px|false|true” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” min_height=”181.8px” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”3px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n It is worth noting that, beyond its purpose as a lighthouse, this building was a key reference point, as a geodesic point, for the scientist <\/span>Pierre Fran\u00e7ois Andr\u00e9 M\u00e9chain <\/span><\/b>to create the <\/span>international decimal metric system<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Montju\u00efc lighthouse<\/span><\/b> also deserves to be mentioned, as it replaced Torre del Rellotge and Farola del Llobregat. It is in a spot that is difficult to access, on the slope of <\/span>Montju\u00efc mountain<\/span><\/b>, specifically in <\/span>Morrot <\/span><\/b>area. The <\/span>lighthouse<\/span><\/a> we find today was built in 1925, although until it was commissioned, a provisional one was installed with an oil lamp, which was replaced by an incandescent lamp in 1915.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Finally, don’t miss <\/span>Sant Crist\u00f2fol lighthouse<\/span><\/b> in the town of <\/span>Vilanova i la Geltr\u00fa<\/span><\/b>, in the province of Barcelona. Since the mid-19th century, this town has had this luminous signpost for navigators, although its structure was gradually modernised until 1905, when the current <\/span>lighthouse<\/span><\/a> was built.
