Although the area had been inhabited by Iberians (the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Layetani<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), there is no evidence of a previous urban centre on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/EoKrkq4FafhvUUFQ7\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mons T\u00e0ber<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> when the Romans established the city, which was probably intended to house military veterans. From the 3rd century onwards, the city, like the rest of the Empire, suffered economic and demographic decline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, by the 4th century, Barcino had regained its importance: its sturdy <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">walls <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">protected it from invasions and even allowed it to overtake Tarraco. The first wall was erected when the colony was founded, built with large ashlars in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">opus quadratum<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
